Raleigh, NC steps over Buffalo for most hot dogs consumed per capita

WASHINGTON, DC – In 2022, Americans spent more than $8.3 Billion on hot dogs and sausages in U.S. Supermarkets, a 2.5 percent increase from last year. And now, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) announced the American cities that contributed most to those hot dog and sausage consumption stats, referencing Nielsen data for total sales and per capita sales from that year.

Los Angeles easily remained the top hot dog destination, with nearly 30 million pounds of hot dogs sold last year. The City of Angles also regained the title of top sausage city, with its residents purchasing 35,781,807 pounds of sausages last year versus New York’s 35,658,242. Just like voting, every hot dog and sausage matters!

Rounding out the top 10 sausage cities were Chicago in third place, followed by Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington DC, Phoenix, and Atlanta.

Many of those cities are also top hot dog destinations: Dallas narrowly beat out Chicago for third place, followed by Philadelphia, Boston, Houston, Washington DC, Tampa Bay, and Atlanta at 10.

If you’re disappointed that you didn’t find your city on this list, don’t fret – the NHDSC also has new data on the most hot dogs and sausages consumed per capita.

There is a new champion when it comes to hot dogs consumed per capita: Raleigh! The North Carolina city leapfrogged over Buffalo, which held the top spot for the last two years. The top 10 hot dog consuming cities per capita include: Raleigh, NC; Greensboro, NC; Buffalo, NY; Paducah, KY; Charlotte, NC; Knoxville, TN; Birmingham, AL; Little Rock, AL; Richmond, VA; and Norfolk, VA.

"Hot dogs may be most associated with major cities like New York and Chicago, but they are truly beloved in the south,” said NHDSC President and Hot Dog Top Dog Eric Mittenthal. “North Carolina is this year’s hot dog capital of America with three cities in the top five for per capita consumption.”

Southern Cajun cooking again catapulted Louisiana into the top spots for sausage consuming cities per capita. The top 10 in 2022 were: Baton Rouge, LA; New Orleans, LA; Dallas, TX; Mobile, AL; Little Rock, AL; Raleigh, NC; Norfolk, VA; Buffalo, NY; Birmingham, AL; and Houston, TX. It’s clear that a handful of states are representing their love for hot dogs and sausages more than others.

“No gumbo or jambalaya is complete without the sausage, so Cajun varieties are very popular down on the bayou, said Mittenthal. “Louisiana laps the field when it comes to per capita love of sausage.”
